Grand Palace & Wat Pho

No Bangkok trip is complete without a morning among the golden spires of the Grand Palace — Thailand's most celebrated landmark and an easy half-day outing from our Silom hotel. The former royal residence houses Wat Phra Kaew and its revered Emerald Buddha, carved from a single block of jade and dressed by the King himself at the changing of the seasons.

Ten minutes' walk south of the palace walls sits Wat Pho, Bangkok's oldest temple and home of the enormous gold-leafed Reclining Buddha — 46 metres from serene face to mother-of-pearl feet. Wat Pho is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, and its on-site pavilion is still one of the best (and best-value) places in Bangkok to get one.

A few practical notes: go early (gates open 8:30am) to beat the heat and the crowds, dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered for both sites — and budget around ฿500 entry for the Grand Palace and around ฿300 for Wat Pho. Ignore anyone outside claiming the palace is "closed today"; it's a classic detour scam.

Getting there from SO Zen: the scenic route is the Chao Phraya express boat — BTS one stop from Surasak to Saphan Taksin, then boat to Tha Tien pier, right by Wat Pho. A taxi from our Bang Rak neighbourhood takes about 20 minutes outside rush hour. Combine it with lunch in Chinatown on the way back — it's on the same side of the river.
