Chao Phraya River & Asiatique

The Chao Phraya is Bangkok's original highway, and staying in Bang Rak puts you closer to it than almost any other neighbourhood — Sathorn Pier is one BTS stop (or a 15-minute stroll) from our door. Hop on the orange-flag express boat and the city unfolds from the water: teak mansions, glittering temples, and the five-star riverfront, all for a few baht.

The classic sunset shot is Wat Arun, the "Temple of Dawn", its porcelain-encrusted spire glowing across the water as longtail boats hum past. Ride the boat north to Tha Tien, cross by ferry, and you're there — or simply order a drink at any riverside bar in Bang Rak and let the view come to you.

After dark, the river turns into Bangkok's night-out artery. Asiatique The Riverfront — an open-air market and dining strip in restored warehouses, complete with a giant Ferris wheel — runs a free shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier every evening from around 4pm. It's an easy, breezy night out: browse, snack, catch the river breeze, and be back at the hotel in twenty minutes.

Our tip for first-timers: take the hop-on-hop-off tourist boat one way for the commentary, then come back on the cheap express boat like a local. Either way, you'll understand why we say a Silom–Bang Rak hotel is the best base in Bangkok: the river, the skyline, and Chinatown are all one short ride away.
