Lumphini Park

Lumphini Park is where Bangkok exhales. Named after the Buddha's birthplace in Nepal, this half-square-kilometre of lawns, lakes, and old rain trees has been the city's shared front garden since the 1920s — and it sits just one BTS stop (or a pleasant 20-minute walk) from the hotel.

Come early if you can. From around 5:30am the park belongs to tai chi groups, joggers doing laps of the 2.5km path, and aunties power-walking in matching visors. By 7am the outdoor gym by the lake is in full swing and vendors outside the Silom-side gates are selling fresh soy milk and warm pathongko (Thai doughnuts). This is one of the best free spectacles in Bangkok.

In the cooler evening hours, rent a swan-shaped paddleboat on the lake, look out for the park's famous free-roaming water monitor lizards (harmless, startlingly large), or join the open-air aerobics session by the main gate — hundreds of Bangkokians dancing to blasting Thai pop as the skyline lights up behind the trees.

Getting there from SO Zen: walk east along Silom Road, or take the BTS one stop from Surasak to Sala Daeng and stroll through. Entry is free; the park is open 4:30am–10pm.
